A constituency Saturday with John Nicolson MP

Categories: Events

John Nicolson MP has been spending some time engaging with local businesses and charities this weekend across The Wee County.

The Clacks MP dropped in on ACE Furniture (Alloa Community Enterprise) on Saturday to meet with staff and volunteers working to provide low-cost furniture to the local community. John received a tour of their premises and was walked through how their various initiatives work within their facility.

John was impressed with the work done by ACE, more specifically their ‘Ask Kevin’ program.

ACE uses a discrete way of providing furniture to locals who are experiencing hardship or who find it challenging to approach support services for assistance. “Ask Kevin is our initiative that helps keep individuals who may have been referred to us from feeling embarrassed asking for help. ‘Ask Kevin’ acts as a code word for them.”

Mr. Nicolson then stopped into ‘Bees on the primrose” In Alloa, a sustainable, premium coffee shop run by Lesley and her partner, Douglas.

John had a wonderful time chatting away with the owners and remarked: “Delighted to pop into ‘Bees on the Primrose’ coffee shop now open in Alloa.” The MP had a cup of coffee and posed for some photos alongside Lesley and her sister.

“This dynamic team are planning to expand their opening hours from weekends to weekdays serving premium coffee, homemade soup and all manner of treats! Handily… just a few doors down from my office!”

John finished off his day with ‘Guid Reads’ in Alva, an independent ‘pay-what-you-can’ bookstore ran by Ruth Galloway. The initiative behind the bookstore serves as a community hub where locals can come down and enjoy some company along with a read.

Filled with all manner of books from Scots poetry to fantasy novels, there’s something for everyone at Guid Reads. The MP took the opportunity to purchase a cookbook written by his close friend and celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson.

“Always a joy to pop in and see the lovely Ruth Galloway who runs Guid Reads in Alva. She’s as fun and charming as the wonderful bookshop she owns and runs. I never want to leave.”

“Visiting our diverse local businesses is one of the favourite parts of my job. So it was a real pleasure to visit ACE Furniture this weekend and learn about their amazing upgraded furniture and other bargains, ‘Bees on the Primrose’, a fab new Alloa coffee shop, and Guid Reads – a treasure trove of books in Alva.”
